I do not believe that autism is incurable. No, I said! I see a lot of comments saying that autism is a "brain disorder" that is not strictly accurate. Most incidences of autism seem to have a variety of causes, ranging from the low absorption of essential fatty acids, methylation of the poor, an overactive immune system and a new one for most people, high levels of the hormone testosterone. There are definitely some children on the autism spectrum that are actually brain disorders, but due to the increasing incidence of autism, this can not be the main cause.
Most people have not heard talk of spironolactone as a means to treat high levels of testosterone in young children with autism. Now I will not claim this is the medical breakthrough of century, but I am convinced that there is definitely a large number of cases of infantile autism, where the son has an undiagnosed hormonal problem. The presence of testosterone in large quantities can produce delayed effects of learning similar to those found in the standard model of autism. Professor Simon Baron-Cohen has produced important research in this area. Spironolactone is defined as an aldosterone antagonist, a potassium-sparing diuretic that has a strong immunity and hormone modifying properties. This makes it a very strong candidate for use as an intervention in autism spectrum disorders, where the child has very high testosterone.
Moreover, very low on the radar of autism is the use of carnitine. An abnormality observed in autism, is to build up long-chain and very long chain fatty acids in the cell membranes. Carnitine is essential for transporting chain fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane, in order to break down to be metabolized. Now, very significantly, carnitine has also helped many autistic children, and the fact is that there is a glycogen storage disease itself which is a technique a carnitine deficiency syndrome, with symptoms identical to those of infantile autism! On a daily basis, television advertisers bombard us with omega-3 and omega-6 products. I firmly believe that many autistic children have serious deficiencies in these essential fatty acids, for the same reason (acid chained fatty build – UN-metabolized).
As with all treatments, a physician should always be consulted.
