Kids love toys. Toys are more than something your child plays with, even if the child does not realize. Toys help teach interaction and communication, and with a little imagination, which can transport the child from her daily life in another realm. Toys can be opened without learning so that might arouse interest in a future career or simply provide inspiration for children to be older than they are.

But what about disabled children? When we think of children playing with toys, pictures of happy, healthy children usually come to mind. It might consider that the child bound to a wheelchair wheels or confined to bed due to a debilitating illness. These children need toys, too.

Buying toys for children with disabilities should not be different than buying toys for healthy children, but for some reason, thought of a disabled child sometimes brings a mental block. You may feel like do not know what toy for a child to someone who is blind or deaf.

Selecting a toy for disabled children is not really that difficult. All you have to do is try to look at the toy from a different perspective. National Lekotek Center, a nonprofit organization, dedicates its research to the development toys for children with disabilities. Here are some tips that the center has for those seeking toys for disabled children:

1. Consider what the toy appeals to a child in more than one level of sensory perception. A toy that has a unique texture could appeal to a blind child, while one with the lights or the movement would be wonderful for a deaf child.

2. How easy is the toy? Make sure the toy is not so complicated A child with a disability will be frustrated. Think about how many steps the child will have to go to activate the toy. Will it work with a simple push of a button, or there are several things that the child should first before making the toy works?

3. The toy can be used anywhere? Will a child bedridden be able to use it while lying down? Will a child in a wheelchair can play with the toy in your lap or on a tray?

4. Does the child like toys that can be used however he or she likes? Is it a game for a specific purpose, or can the child to make up their own games as you go?

5. Disabled children want toys that everyone else is playing. Is the toy based on a movie or a current popular book? Toy is the thing that everyone is that the disabled child can have too?

6. Does the toy allow the free expression and creativity?

7. How adjustable is the toy? Try to account for the height, volume, speed and difficulty. Is the toy grow with the child or toy for a very narrow age range? Does the potential as a collectible? Is it something the child will repeatedly or exceeded the child quickly?

8. Safety is always a consideration of whether the child is disabled or not. Consider the child's size and strength and durability toy. Does the child have the dexterity to handle small moving parts, or larger pieces are necessary for the child to manipulate the toy? Can the toy wet without going broke? Is the toy easy to clean?

9. It is the right toy for the child and the chronological age?

10. What is the level of interaction between the child and the toy? Is it an active toy, or a toy that requires very little effort by the child? Does the toy has the potential promote social interaction with other children?

Disabled children are no different from other children. These children still love to play, and yet need toys. With these tips in mind, you should have no trouble finding that special toy for that special child.
